The homeowners desired a more modern and functional lower level.  The update required contemporary materials throughout the space, as the built-ins and 1/2 bath were in need of particular attention.   Expanding the open area was very important to accomplish the new floor plan.  The homeowners were especially excited in gaining the children’s play area.  The materials used in this project included recessed lights on dimmer switches in the main finished areas; Starmark natural maple cabinets, Silestone quartz countertops, and a Formica quartz bar sink in the bar area; and a maple vanity with Corian countertop and an integral bowl for ease of cleaning in the bathroom.  Kohler faucets were used in the bathroom and bar area, while ceramic floor tile was used for the bar area and the bathroom while the rest of the finished areas were carpeted.

Wauwatosa’s oldest home recently went through a kitchen renovation.  The home was originally built in the mid 1800s and in the Gothic Revival style.  The kitchen renovation done in the early 1980s was not sensitive to the period of the home.  The new renovation transformed the kitchen, taking it back in time by using vintage gothic style custom cabinetry with granite countertops and handmade backsplash tiles incorporating a Fleur delis motif.  Arched gothic wood fronts with antique wavy glass were used on the upper cabinets.  Professional appliances were installed with decorative wood fronts that provide a seamless built-in look.   A plate rack and wood-carved corbels are integrated above the original kitchen bay window that overlooks the homeowners’ beautiful gardens.  A custom quarter-sawn oak table with gothic elements was designed and built for a perfect fit within the bay.  New quarter-sawn oak was chosen to match the existing oak floors throughout.  The rear entry was also renovated to allow for the homeowners’ antique armoire, which is now used as their pantry cupboard.

S.J. Janis Company: Addition and Kitchen Remodel • 13055 Lee Court • Elm Grove
Directions: North Avenue to Fairhaven Blvd. and go south to Lee Ct. and go west.
The goal of the project was to create an area that encompassed all the elements for family living, as well as entertaining larger groups.  Relating all this to the yard and pool to create an easy flow for summer entertaining was at the top of their list.  A 1.5-story addition, featuring tall double hung windows on the first floor, consists of a family room, dinette, and open kitchen.  A large island separates the open kitchen from the rest of the family area. The custom cherry cabinets topped with Amazon Star granite add a furniture-like appearance, while adding storage. The kitchen is designed with a bank of pantry cabinets at one end and the 48” built-in refrigerator at the other. A raised dishwasher and built-in microwave flank the working side of the island.  A screen porch off the family room allows direct access to the yard and pool. Interchangeable storm and screen panels allow the homeowners to extend the useable season for the porch.  The formal dining room nearly doubled in size, with a full wall of windows to brighten the space.  A new set of French doors link the formal space to the family living area so it can become part of the larger entertainment space when needed.

This ranch home expanded dramatically with a 12’ x 20’ addition, which includes a new mission style kitchen with island, dinette, mudroom and full basement.  The craftsman style was incorporated by using Maplewood, shaker door cabinetry, and copper rust slate tile backsplash in a geometric pattern, along with a touch of modern stainless steel appliances.  The homeowners are avid gardeners and wanted to see their gardens and pergola, which was accomplished by placing the kitchen and dinette in the new addition with the sink and windows facing the rear. The former kitchen now serves as the mudroom.

Pekel Construction & Remodeling, Inc. Full House Remodel and Addition • 860 Brinsmere Drive • Elm Grove
Directions: Watertown Plank Road west past Sunnyslope Road, one block to Brinsmere Drive. Turn right (north) on Brinsmere Drive.
Originally constructed as a modest cape cod, the house was barely any larger than the detached garage.  The new owners loved the house and the location, but simply needed more space. A full width dormer for two bedrooms, a future master bath, a second floor bathroom remodel, and a walk-in closet was part of the second floor renovations. The existing garage was demolished. Using the space where the old garage had stood, the addition of a family room with fireplace, a complete and expanded kitchen remodel, a first floor laundry room, and a new attached 2.5 car garage almost doubled the home’s original square footage.  The entire house was resided with fiber cement siding and composite trim, with a new roof to match the additions. Other interior improvements, including tall crown moldings and a fireplace “makeover,” reflect the owners’ style.

The two-story Lannon-stone addition to a 1930s Tudor home features a well-appointed family room and master suite, both showcasing exotic hardwood flooring.  A seamless transition from the existing home to the addition was achieved using antique lighting, vintage hardware, leaded glass windows, and matching stone masonry. An antique fireplace surround, natural stone, and ornate cherry cabinetry are some of the old-world details in the distinctive master suite.

Refined Renovations: Kitchen Renovation • 7745 Mary Ellen Place • Wauwatosa
Directions: From Bluemound Ave., turn north onto 77th Street then left on to Mary Ellen Place.
Because the existing floor plan of the kitchen didn’t allow enough space to simply remodel to meet the needs of today’s family, a plan was developed to add a little more than 110 square feet. While the addition was small, the impact on the layout, function and aesthetics was vast. With traffic flow eased, it allowed this kitchen to have all the amenities required by today’s 21st century family, such as a laptop desk space, iPod docking station, and flat screen TV. This Mediterranean style house inspired the basis for the new and graceful appointments in the kitchen, from baroque doorways and antiqued clay tile floors to the glazed custom cabinetry and exquisite Venetian plasterwork.

This 1950s Cape Cod home underwent dramatic changes to the first floor, including a front entry addition, kitchen addition, master suite addition, mudroom entryway addition, new windows throughout, and a third bay garage addition.  The kitchen was designed to take advantage of sightlines to the large secluded backyard and also to provide direct access to the dining room and the mudroom entryway from the third garage bay. The new kitchen showcases dark stained cherry cabinetry, granite countertops, oak hardwood floor, stainless steel appliances and a large walk-in pantry.  The new dining room incorporates floor to ceiling windows, a gas fireplace with tile surround, cherry mantel, and cherry display cabinetry on either side of the fireplace.  The laundry room and auxiliary closet space are located in a connecting hallway between the new master suite and the dining room, providing ease of access and convenience to the homeowners.  The new master suite with vaulted ceilings incorporates the original Lannon stone exterior along the west side of the room, with windows and a patio door providing sightlines to the backyard. The master bathroom also incorporates vaulted ceilings, a walk-in shower with a slate tile surround, a whirlpool tub alcove, his/her cherry vanity and linen cabinet, a separate water closet room and slate tile floors. Winters Group, LLC: Interior Remodel – Kitchen/Living Room/Dining Room • 6912 Cedar Street • Wauwatosa
Directions: From Bluemound Road, north on 70th Street for four blocks to Cedar Street and east.
This project required a design that would use existing space to best accommodate a new kitchen and dining room.  Both rooms were totally gutted and new mechanicals were installed at the same time.   Featuring custom-made kitchen and dining room cabinetry in the “arts and crafts” style of design, granite countertops, along with the custom-made mouldings and light valances, all add to the craftsman look.  The project features a custom-made mantle, along with several pieces of furniture specifically made to blend well with the home’s arts and crafts feel.
