The
Milwaukee/NARI
Home
Improvement
Council
was
chartered
on
July
12,
1961,
as
the
Home
Improvement
Council
of
Greater
Milwaukee,
a
chapter
of
the
National
Home
Improvement
Council.
The
NHIC,
founded
in
1956
as
an
outgrowth
of
the
Eisenhower
administration's
"Operation
Home
Improvement,"
was
an
organization
designed
to
promote
home
remodeling
in
order
to
stimulate
the
economy.
In
Milwaukee,
15
firms
in
the
home
remodeling
industry
joined
together
to
establish
the
local
chapter.
It
was
the
fourth
chapter
in
the
nation
to
be
chartered
and
has
since
proven
to
be
the
largest
and
most
active.
The
chapters
primary
objective
was
to
band
together
firms
who
met
high
ethical
standards
for
reliable,
professional
remodelers.
Having
no
financial
backing
(dues
were
only
$50.00
per
year),
the
chapter
relied
completely
on
voluntary
help
from
the
members.
Only
three
committees
were
appointed
in
the
first
year
and
the
chapter
did
not
even
have
a
phone
or
answering
service.
In
May
1982,
the
National
Home
Improvement
Council
(NHIC)
merged
with
the
National
Remodelers
Association
(NRA),
an
organization
with
its
roots
in
the
National
Recovery
Act
of
1933,
to
form
the
organization
known
today
as
the
National
Association
of
the
Remodeling
Industry
(NARI).
The
Milwaukee/NARI
Home
Improvement
Council
has
been
very
active
in
the
proceedings
of
the
national
organization.
It
is
the
largest
local
chapter
in
NARI
and
is
respected
nationally.
Many
programs
that
have
been
developed
in
Milwaukee
have
been
adopted
by
other
chapters
across
the
country.
The
council
offers
many
services
to
its
members
and
to
the
public.
Members
benefit
from
the
consumer
shows,
group
advertising,
and
educational
seminars,
plus
the
services
offered
by
NARI.
The
public
can
get
free
brochures
on
remodeling
and
a
list
of
Milwaukee/NARI's
reliable
contractors
from
the
office.
They
also
benefit
from
educational
articles
and
radio
and
TV
shows
that
the
Council
sponsors
to
help
them
get
the
most
from
their
remodeling.
The
Council's
goals
of
encouraging
ethical
conduct,
sound
business
practices,
and
professionalism
in
the
remodeling
industry
have
led
to
the
growth
of
the
remodeling
industry
nationwide
and
made
NARI
a
recognized
authority
in
that
industry.
The
local
chapter
--
Milwaukee/NARI
Home
Improvement
Council
--
with
more
than
40
years
of
experience
is
a
forum
for
professional
remodelers
and
an
ally
of
the
homeowner.
